Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit Samoa and Tonga

10:34 am on 12 July 2011

The Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma is to make his first official visits to Tonga and Samoa this week.

Ben Lowings reports from London:

"Mr Sharma is expected in Apia on the fourteenth of July for a two-day visit. He's to hold talks with Samoa's Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi. Mr Sharma goes on to Nuku'alofa from the seventeenth to the nineteenth of July, to meet Tonga's Prime Minister, Lord Tuivakano. Democracy and good governance are foremost on the Secretary-General's agenda. Fiji is the Commonwealth's main concern in the Pacific: A visit there is not on the agenda. Officials could not be reached for comment."
