Cook Islands to base staffer in Auckland to help with medical referrals

6:34 pm on 8 July 2011

The Cook Islands Ministry of Health is to again employ an Auckland-based staffer to help those referred to New Zealand from the Cook Islands for medical treatment.

The health minister, Nandi Glassie, says the position's been successful in the past and about 60 thousand US dollars has been allocated in this year's budget to cover salary and other costs.

Each time a person is referred to New Zealand for medical treatment the employee will meet them at Auckland's international airport and assist them in getting to hospital.

In addition they'll provide advice on how they can apply for relevant welfare support while away from the Cook Islands.
