Fiji Labour Party surprised at court reporting gag

The Fiji Labour Party has questioned the interim regime's motivation for gagging the local media's reporting of a court case brought against the planned pension cuts.

The Labour Party says strangely none of the Fiji media carried any report of last Monday's hearing, given the profound interest to thousands of retirees who have been devastated by the National Provident Fund's decision to cut the pension.

The party says it is not a political issue and there is no threat to national security.

The Fund and the Attorney General have attempted to block a legal challenge against the proposed change.

However on Monday, the High Court ordered all parties to file written submissions within seven days.

Media censorship was introduced in Fiji two years ago after the regime abolished the constitution.
