Solomon Islands has banned purse seine fishing after using up its fishing quota for this year under limits imposed by the Parties to the Nauru Agreement.

The 2,146 days allocated to the country has been reached to due unusually good fishing conditions in the first half of the year.

As a result, the government has banned the widely-used fishing method until it can purchase more days from other member countries.

Last year, Nauru used up its allowable limit and was able to purchase extra days from the Marshall Islands.
