Concerns raised at military taking Fiji public service top jobs

A Fiji NGO, the Citizens Constitutional Forum, has raised concerns about the increasing militarisation of senior public service positions.

Senior military officers already control a number of key government agencies and the latest appointments include Major Ned Taito becoming chief executive of the country's main hospital.

The CCF's chief executive, the Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says while these appointments may hasten the interim regime's planned public sector reforms, it could be more effective if career civil servants are able to step up into such key positions and be the champions of that process.

He says during a transitional period it's prudent to appoint those with the relevant experience in specialist positions as this would set in motion long-term plans, post 2014, to increase and maintain the desired standards of performance and service delivery.
