Fiji NGO calls for Pacific backing for UN resolution on human rights resolution

The Citizens' Constitutional Forum in Fiji is seeking the support of Pacific countries for the United Nations resolution on ending human rights violations, with a specific focus on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The CCF chief executive, Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says it's an historic resolution that affirms the universality of human rights, and notes concern about acts of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The UN Resolution report shows that in the past 18 months 31 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons have been murdered in one country alone.

Reverend Yabaki says while issues of sexual orientation and gender identity are sensitive issues for many countries, no human being should face violence, torture, stigmatisation and abuse, on any grounds.

He says the CCF is calling on the member states to ensure the resolution is passed and adopted.
