Fiji Rugby CEO quits

10:23 am on 16 June 2011

The Fiji Rugby Union is on the hunt for a new chief executive after Keni Dakuidreketi quit his post yesterday.

Dakuidreketi has served the FRU as either Board Chairman or CEO for the past 10 years.

He says it's been a privilege and honour to serve the FRU and that, while there have been touhg times there've also been rewards such as the 2005 Sevens World Cup victory, the 2006 Sevens World Series triumph and the Flying Fijians quarter final finish at the last world cup.

In recent months Dakuidreketi's administration has been at odds with the interim Fiji Government over the release of funds that were promised towards Fiji's world cup campaign.

A little over US$220 000 has been released to date despite assurances at the start of the year that close to $1 700 000 would be made available.

Mr Dakuidreketi also expressed his frustrations at Fiji being unable to select their best players for tournaments in New Zealand and Australia because of travel bans on players linked with the military.

He's the second rugby CEO to resign in the past 24 hours, after Scotland's Gordon McKie also relinquished his post.
