French Polynesia's Tahoeraa postpones Congress

1:49 pm on 10 June 2011

French Polynesia's opposition Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party has postponed this weekend's Congress to the end of October.

The Tahoeraa has issued a statement, saying some party sub-sections haven't completed the mandated renewal of their officials.

The Congress was expected to renew the party leadership which includes its founder and leader, Gaston Flosse.

Mr Flosse, who is also a member of the French Senate, is awaiting a ruling in early October in a court case alleging he misspent millions of dollars of public funds on phantom jobs to his party's benefit.

If convicted, he could be jailed and lose office.
