Decline in visitor arrivals in Vanuatu for first quarter

Visitor numbers to Vanuatu from January to March this year have dropped by just over 20 percent compared with the same period last year.

The number of travellers from flights for the first quarter of this year have decreased from nearly 20,000 in 2010 to under 16,000 this year.

An official from the Government Statistics Office, Simil Johnson, says the floods in Queensland and the earthquake in Christchurch earlier this year may have led to the decline.

"My view is that they may have planned to come but when this disaster struck maybe they started to consider [other] priority to their needs than travel to Vanuatu."
