The South Korean government has pledged its commitment to assist Pacific Island countries with economic development through the expansion of trade and investments.

Development was on the agenda at last week's first Korea-Pacific Islands Foreign Ministers' Meeting, involving 14 Pacific foreign ministers, in Seoul.

The Solomon Islands Foreign Minister Peter Shanel says the aim of the meeting was to strengthen cooperation in areas of development, climate change and environmental issues.

"We were talking about continuing economic development; the South Korean government assisting the Pacific countries or contributing to the economic development of the Pacific Island countries. Mainly by expanding trade, investments, particularly in fisheries, marine resources, energy and tourism."

Peter Shanel says all participating countries have signed an agreement to meet again every three years.
