The largest conservation area in the Solomon Islands will get a new name this month during a festival to celebrate a three-year project to enhance the area on Kolombangara Island.
The Kolombangara Island Biodiversity Conservation Association has built tracks, huts, and increased public awareness of the island's natural environment.
The Association is organising a celebration next week and it's running a competition to select a name for the overall area.
Co-ordinator Ferguson Vaghi says, as part of the project, scientists were invited to study the environment and says its bio-diversity is richer than first thought.
"Scientists have found out that Kolombangara has a very high bio-diversity in the Solomons and there are some endemic species of birds and frogs, which is very unique in the island.'"
Ferguson Vaghi says there's no plan to change indigenous names or existing features in the 20-000 hectare area.
