Health officials in Fiji say they're making progress in curbing a typhoid outbreak which has infected 149 people and claimed one life, since January.

Most of the infections have been in Bua province and two weeks ago the ministry of health instituted a public health emergency.

A ministry spokesperson Peni Namotu says that emergency has now been lifted because there's been a positive response from the people and the number of reported infections has dropped.

"We can say at this point in time that we have contained the typhoid outbreak in Bua through the awareness and also through the anti typhoid campaign team providing, not only assistance but also trying to help the people out, changing their behaviour towards basic sanitation and hygiene."
