7:41 pm on 25 May 2011

The French high commission in New Caledonia says on June the 17th municipal councils have to choose their delegates for the election of the territory's members of the French Senate.

On September the 25th, New Caledonia will then for the first time elect two senators as the size of the French upper house is being increased to 348.

The two will be chosen by an electoral body made up of the municipal delegates, the members of the three provincial assemblies and the two members of the French National Assembly.

The senators are elected for a six-year term.

The territory's only senator is Simon Loueckhote who has held the position since 1992.
