PNG plans national broadband network

The Papua New Guinea government is considering a detailed strategic plan for a national fibre optic broadband internet network.

The minister for Public Enterprises, Arthur Somare, says significant progress has been made on plans to integrate the proposed fibre optic cable for the liquified natural gas project with current infrastructure operated by government agencies.

He says the government expects to create a telecommunications super highway with key hubs in Southern Highlands, Port Moresby, Lae, Madang and the Highlands.

The minister says that work to upgrade broadband internet services and make it more affordable to the public is anticipated well before PNG makes its first LNG shipment in 2014.
