The new head of the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation's board says it's time to implemement what he describes as some ambitious plans for this year.

Ewan Smith's appointment follows the sudden resignation of Tata Crocombe on the basis of wanting to spend more time with his family.

But Mr Smith, who's also the managing director of Air Rarotonga, says Mr Crocombe had also reached the end of his two year term in the role.

He says during that time the organisation underwent a total review in terms of its strategy for the growth of tourism.

"There's been a strategic plan put in place. So there's been lots of work put into budgeting. There is an expanded marketing budget. There is a marketing strategy. All of the roles of staff in the tourism corporation have been redefined and staff have settled into those positions. So all of that's in palce now we've got to get on and implementing it."

Ewan Smith says the corporation wants to grow tourism by 50 percent.
