An Australian mining company is funding repairs to a Solomon Islands hospital damaged by the Japan tsunami.

Buala Hospital has received 12,500 US dollars from the Australian mining company Axiom KB, which has nickel exploration plans in Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Star newspaper reports that the hospital's needed major repair work for a long time.

A statement from Axiom KB says the donation will assist in the second phase of renovation work for Buala hospital.

The Isabel Provincial secretary Adrian Tony says the assistance will go a long way towards maintaining the facilities of the hospital.

The mining company says it decided to assist the hospital because it provides an essential service to the people of the area.
