PNG police to get pay rise

2:31 pm on 11 May 2011

Papua New Guinea police officers are set for a pay rise.

The acting police commissioner, Tony Wagambie, says progress has been made in reviewing the salaries and allowances of all ranks and once formally approved, the increases will be back-dated to the beginning of this year.

The Acting Commissioner says the government recognises the rapid economic development in the country means inflation will also rise rapidly.

He says in order to maintain industrial stability, and especially in the law and order sector, the real value of earnings must as far as possible be maintained.

Mr Wagambie says the National Executive Council recognises the important role played by the Police Force in maintaining investor confidence and had made allowance for a pay rise.
