The Australian Greens has called on the federal government to clarify rumours that it's seeking to reopen the controversial refugee detention centre on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island.
Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says if these rumours are true, it will represent another about turn on immigration policy.
Last year, the former Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, ruled out reopening the Manus Island centre, but the Senator claims Canberra officials have been in PNG this week.
She say the immigration minister, Chris Bowen, must say if they were there to discuss re-opening the centre.
Under its so called Pacific Solution the John Howard administration had run detention centres on Manus and in Nauru.
