Ninety-one prisoners escape PNG jail

Ninety-one prisoners at Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands provincial jail were freed yesterday after six armed men broke into the compound and stole guns and ammunition.

According to the newspaper, The National, the attack took place between 1am and 2am when the masked men, armed with semi-automatic assault rifles, entered the prison and held up two guards in the detention compound.

The Correctional Services commissioner Richard Sikani says the group of men and the freed inmates ransacked the prison's armoury, emptying it of all its contents.

While one prisoner has been recaptured, provincial authorities and the public have been asked to help return the escapees.
