New Caledonia unions call for action over cost of living

8:34 am on 30 April 2011

New Caledonia's union umbrella organisation has decried the high cost of living and demanded a structural reform of the territory's economy.

Six of the seven unions have called for three consecutive days of a general strike in mid-May with one day each in the three provinces.

One leader says immediate fundamental change is needed because costs have become unbearable.

There are claims that nothing is done by the politicians who are faced by lobbyists of the nickel industry, the wholesale distributors, the real estate sector and the banks.
