A concert in Hawaii has raised 1.6 million US dollars for the Japanese tsunami recovery effort.
The money raised will go towards the relief effort of the American Red Cross, which is providing food, shelter, psycho-social support and medical supplies to tsunami victims.
The chief executive of the Hawaiian Chapter of the American Red Cross, Coralie Matayoshi, says they decided to hold the concert because the state has many ties with Japan, and many people have friends and family living there.
She says everyone involved donated their time and resources.
"It was a great great atmosphere. Everyone was so passionate about helping the people of Japan and we wanted to show that our hearts went out to them and we were with them in this time of tragedy and that we were there to support them."
Coralie Matayoshi says the concert featured artists such as Willie Nelson, Mick Fleetwood and Jack Johnson, and was broadcast on television across the United States and on Japanese radio.
