An elderly man in Fiji drowned and a boy is feared dead after the boat they were travelling in to their village in the highlands capsized at the weekend.

Police recovered the body of Andre Vasutoga, 70, yesterday morning while a search was still in progress late yesterday for the body of 10-year old Aporosa Tuibau.

Fiji Times online says the pair are from Burotu Village in Namosi.

The incident happened in the Navua River on late Saturday afternoon when the two were going to their village with 10 others on a boat.

Police spokesman, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri, says the boat met strong currents because of heavy rainfall in the highlands from Friday.

He says the vessel also experienced engine problems and coupled with the strong currents, it capsized halfway up the river.

Inspector Sokomuri says it was a tragic incident and people should take precautions when travelling by boat during bad weather.
