Workers at mine in Papua demand greater protection after shootings

5:31 am on 11 April 2011

Hundreds of employees of U.S. mining giant Freeport have demanded guarantees of safety at the world's largest gold mine in Indonesia's Papua province after the killing of two colleagues.

The workers waved banners outside the office of PT Freeport Indonesia and refused to be transported to the mining site.

It was the second day of protests, after the deaths last week of two employees traveling in a company car that caught fire, possibly after being shot at.

The deaths came a day after two other people were wounded in another shooting
