Fiji's interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has met Indonesia's President and National Defence Forces chief in Jakarta.
FBC News reports that the Commodore's discussions with military chief, Admiral Agus Suhartono, centered on forging closer links between the two countries' military forces.
In his meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Commodore Bainimarama was told the military can play a positive role in support of a democratic society.
The President said Fiji can adapt into true democratic rule and, like Indonesia, should find its own style of democracy to suit the Fijian people.
Commodore Bainimarama and Mr Yudhoyono discussed Fiji's request to be granted observer status in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Currently, ASEAN has just one observer state, Papua New Guinea.
Fiji and PNG's leaders recently granted Indonesia observer status at the Melanesian Spearhead Group.
