Losing candidate in Samoa general election rejects call to drop petition

An unsuccessful candidate in Samoa's general election has rejected a call to drop his election petition against the new Minister of Finance, Faumuina Tiatia Liuga.

Tautua Samoa party candidate, Le Tagaloa Pita, was approached by a delegation of chiefs and orators of Palauli le Falefa constituency to not continue with his petition.

But Le Tagaloa says he will proceed with his case because parliamentarians should be law abiding people and not break laws.

Le Tagaloa's petition is questioning the eligibility of Faumuina to compete as a candidate in last months election under the Electoral Act's village service or monotaga requirement.

The Electoral Commissioner is also named in the same case as second respondent.

The Electoral Court in Samoa will start hearing eight of the ten petitions originally filed after the election on 12 of March.
