Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency has reported that at least thirteen people have been killed in ongoing flash floods in Papua province.

The Antara news agency reports that flash floods have plagued the province since mid-March with the latest flooding seriously affecting the Paniai regency since last week.

The Agadide and Ekadide districts in Paniai were swept by the floods with local media reporting that nearly 1000 homes were destroyed.

Around 34,000 residents have been evacuated to higher locations.

The flooding was a result of overflowing swollen rivers and reportedly reached between 1.5 and 2 metres height in some areas.
