Starkist CEO's commitment to American Samoa welcomed

The government and Starkist workers in American Samoa have welcomed commitment from the company's new CEO to future investment in the territory.

In Soo-Cho has been on his first visit as head of the US based company and signalled American Samoa would be home for its fish cannery for another 48 years.

Our correspondent in Pago Pago Monica Miller says at the same time as delivering good news to the hard pressed industry, the Starkist CEO expects the government to deliver on its promises.

"One of the things that the cannery has consistently asked for is that there needs to be a task force be established to look at ways the canning industry in American Samoa can maintain its competitiveness and also asked for increased freezer storage facilities as well as a break on energy costs."

Monica Miller says employees are pleased at news the company thinks it can sustain a 2000 strong work force after job cutbacks in recent times.
