Japanese tourists cancel CNMI trips

More than 2,600 tourists from Japan have cancelled their holidays in the Northern Marianas since the devastating earthquake and tsunami three weeks ago.

A report from the Marianas Visitors Authority puts the loss to the US territory at six million dollars.

The Authority's managing director, Perry Tenorio, says the cancelled trips represent a big loss to the CNMI's hotel industry, and negative impacts will ripple into private and public sector employment.

He says the cancellations to date will cost as many as 60 jobs.
