The Guam Table Tennis Federation says a push to grow the sport on the island and use it as a way to reduce crime is proving successful.

The Governor, Eddie Calvo, has declared April to be Guam Table Tennis Month and the region is currently preparing for the Junior & Cadet Open to be held at the end of next month.

The secretary of the Guam Table Tennis Federation, Narci Sanagustin, says the federation decided last year to donate tables and equipment to local schools in an effort to get more young people playing the sport and spending time with their families.

"We actually believe that if we can get the children busy after school will actually keep them away from getting into trouble. It also brings family time together because table-tennis a recreational sport and we just look forward to families being together, families playing with each other and everybody just having a good time."

Narci Sanagustin says the next step is to get table tennis tables delivered to all the local villages.
