Solomon Islands students in PNG hope for allowances

11:38 am on 10 March 2011

More than 20 Solomon Islands students studying at the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby are still waiting for the Solomons high commissioner to PNG to release their allowances.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports the students have been in PNG since the 3rd week of February.

The high commissioner, Bernard Bata'anisia, is still in Solomon Islands after he'd accompanied a team of PNG investors who'd been assessing investment opportunities there.

The president of the Solomon Islands students body, Malcolm Row, says the students can't get their allowances until the high commissioner returns, but there are reports he's on leave in the Solomons.

Mr Row also says Solomons' authorities should post a representative in PNG to deal with student allowances rather than leave it to the high commission.
