Warning to Samoa's candidates over election petitions

7:13 pm on 9 March 2011

Samoa's Law Society says election petitions will hold up an already overworked justice system.

Candidates have 7 days after the official results are announced in about two weeks to file a petition.

The Society's president, Raymond Schuster, says the challengers will have to make sure their campaigns are squeaky clean first.

"The court's policy is that you have to bring your case with clean hands. You can't bring knowing that you yourself have participated in the same thing that you are now complaining against. And we have had cases from the last election where candidates petitioned and counter-petitioned themselves."
