Tong Sang calls for French Polynesia stability pact

4:07 pm on 2 March 2011

The French Polynesian president, Gaston Tong Sang, has called for a stability pact until the next election due in two years.

Mr Tong Sang made the call a day after he sacked half his government amid a dispute over the 2011 budget.

Mr Tong Sang says he will stay in power despite a drop in support in the assembly in which the opposition coalition has a large majority.

Yesterday, he dismissed the ministers who refused to sign off on his own budget which is a rival document to the one passd by the assembly last month.

The matter is now before the courts and Mr Tong Sang says he will implement the budget which the judges deem to be valid.
