Tahiti opposition banks on Tong Sang resigning

4:13 pm on 22 February 2011

The opposition in French Polynesia says it will not dislodge the president, Gaston Tong Sang, despite humiliating him by imposing a budget against his will.

43 of the 57 assembly members passed the budget late on Saturday local time despite efforts by Mr Tong Sang to stop the process.

Three parties have formed a united front to thwart his budget plans but Tea Hirshon of the Union For Democracy says they don't want to use their numbers to put forward a motion of no confidence.

"We've had the majority for long time. We think that a president of a country who doesn't have a majority - in the past two week there were just nine people - that he should, if he has a minimum of dignity, resign."

Mr Tong Sang has given mixed messages about the conditions for a possible resignation.
