Fiji on US guest workers list

1:07 pm on 18 January 2011

Fiji is among 53 countries selected by the United States whose citizens will be able to work temporarily in the US on special guest worker visas.

The visas will allow US employers to bring in foreign nationals to fill jobs in the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors.

Other Pacific countries that have been selected include Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Fijilive reports the list will be published in a Federal Register.

A seasonal workers scheme in New Zealand has excluded Fiji in response to the 2006 military coup.
