PNG police make arrests in Enga province

9:59 am on 18 January 2011

Papua New Guinea police have announced announced that a special investigations taskforce that had been working in the Porgera District of Enga has begun to arrest people suspected of violent crimes including sexual assault against women.

The acting Police Commissioner Tony Wagambie says following three months of intensive investigations arrests have been made.

He says the arrests send a strong warning to those who would assault vulnerable people, including women and young people, that their actions will not be tolerated.

Mr Wagambie says investigations into other reported cases, including alleged abuses by members of the police in the same area are continuing and he expects more arrests will be made.
