Fiji Taxi Union demands increase in fares

9:49 am on 18 January 2011

The Fiji Taxi Union is demanding an immediate increase in taxi fares as the cost of fuel has increased.

The General Secretary of the union, Rishi Ram says the huge price rises are a slap in the face of the taxi industry and all motorists.

He says he has written a letter to the Transport Ministry, urging it to raise the fares.

"We had made our request and submissions to his office in June last year. And the matter is still before the LTA board and we don't know why it's pending there for so long. So without any further delay, we've asked him to please exercise power vested in him to increase the fares."

Rishi Ram says he would like taxi fares to go from ten Fiji cents per 200 metres to ten cents for every 100 metres.

He says the LTA board is sitting on Thursday and hopes it will consider the Taxi Union's request.
