No decision on budget cuts in American Samoa

7:15 am on 5 January 2011

The Governor of American Samoa Togiola Tulafono has still not made a decision on additional cuts to address the territory's budget shortfall.

After another meeting with key directors and his staff yesterday the governor directed that they take a look at additional options before he makes a final decision.

The Governor's communications director Dr Jacinta Galeai said there's no new additional information to provide as the numbers are still being crunched.

The governor had planned an emergency cabinet meeting but Dr Galeai says it has been postponed until the regular cabinet meeting on the first Wednesday of the month.

He is expected to make an announcement on further cuts then.

Dr. Galeai says it's a challenging and difficult task to come up with cost-cutting measures as no matter what the Governor decides to do it will have a direct effect on people's livelihoods.
