Frost damages PNG Highlands village food gardens

2:12 pm on 30 December 2010

Reports from Papua New Guinea's Highlands say a village near Mt Hagen had its food gardens destroyed by frost.

The Post Courier quotes a community leader of Popral village as saying last week's cold spell was the worst, leaving about 1,000 people without fresh food for Christmas.

He says villagers depended heavily on fruits and vegetables, making the destruction of their food gardens a great loss.

It is believed it will take three to four months to recover the gardens.
