CNMI govt agencies lose power, water

7:36 am on 29 December 2010

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation has disconnected the power and water lines of a number of CNMI government departments and agencies due to unpaid bills.

Among them are divisions of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, whose personnel were sent home early yesterday noon due to the lack of power and water at their workplace.

The CUC chief financial officer Charles Warren says a disconnection notice had been issued to the the agencies.

Warren said the central government owes CUC nearly 2.5 million US dollars, which reflects delinquent payments for August, September, and October.

He says about 50 accounts were on the disconnection list.
