The governor of the Northern Marianas, Benigno Fitial, says he will go back to the Republican Party after it rejected a merger with his Covenant Party.
Mr Fitial is a former Republican, who formed the Covenant Party in 2001 and was elected governor in 2005 and again in 2009.
He says he was the one who made the Republican Party very strong.
Mr Fitial says he has accomplished his mission in becoming a governor under the new Covenant Party and it was time for him to go back and take care of his old party.
He says unless the Republican Party declares him persona non grata, he should be able to rejoin it.
