Tonga MPs choose a new prime minister

11:08 am on 21 December 2010

Tonga should know the identity of its new prime minister by late this morning.

This follows a secret ballot of the 26 MPs in the parliament this morning during which screens were set up throughout the assembly to ensure privacy.

It's been confirmed that one of the two candidates, the noble Tu'ivakano or the pro-democracy leader, Akilisi Pohiva, has won a majority of the votes.

That information is now being conveyed to King George Tupou the 5th.

Once the King has given his endorsement the MPs will be notified.
