Fiji taxi union says public can choose own mode of transport

11:34 am on 20 December 2010

Fiji's Taxi Union is reminding people that taxis are luxury services.

The union has announced an increase of 2.5% in taxi fares from next year, attributed to the increase in VAT imposed by government.

It is also lobbying for another increase that if granted, would see the travelling public paying almost twice the current taxi fare charges.

The Union's general secretary Rishi Ram tells FBC News that the public is free to choose its own mode of transport.

He says people who can not afford them can use another mode of transport.
