The Solomon Islands government says the onus is now on Fiji to lead the way within the Melanesian Spearhead Group following the handover of the MSG chairmanship last week in Honiara.

Fiji officially assumed the MSG leadership at a reconciliation ceremony and summit organised by the Solomon Islands government to break the impasse between Vanuatu and Fiji over the chairmanship.

A spokesman for the government in Honiara, Alfred Sasako, says they are proud that their initiative to facilitate the ceremony has restored unity in the MSG.

"In doing so, explained to Fiji that the MSG leaders or other MSG leaders now look to FIji for the way forward from the day the reconciliation ceremony took place in Honiara."

Meanwhile, the Fiji and Solomon Islands governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen ties between the two nations in sectors such as education, tourism, agriculture and trade.
