Samoa Red Cross in court battle over civil contempt claim

3:30 pm on 15 December 2010

A civil contempt claim against several members of the Red Cross in Samoa is now before the courts.

The president of the Red Cross, Muagututagata Peter Ah Him, filed the claim against the members for disobeying a court injunction

Muagututagata sought the injunction to stop a special meeting in August of the Red Cross to elect a new president and interim board members to manage the organisation's operations.

It followed allegations of misappropriation of funds and tsunami relief supplies laid against the president and several board members.

The defendants in the case include the president of the Umbrella for Non governmental Organisations, Vaasilifiti Moelagi Jackson, and former Red Cross president, Faleao Maka Sapolu.
