The Co-chair of the Governor's Economic Advisory Council in American Samoa, David Robinson, says the the downturn in the economy will continue to the new year.

Mr Robinson says the past four months have seen considerable weakness in most sectors of the economy since all the Federal grant schemes finished.

He says that with the exception of the building and construction industries, he expects this downward trend will continue in American Samoa through into the New Year.

He also says containing rising inflation will be difficult, as it is likely that the cost of commodities and materials will continue to rise.
