Fiji police revoke march permits

5:48 pm on 9 December 2010

The Fiji police have revoked a permit for a march by the NGO Coalition on Human Rights in Suva tomorrow.

The permit had been issued last month subject to the marchers not depicting messages that are politically motivated.

But the police have now cancelled the permit.

Meanwhile, the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has told FBC News that the US embassy has warned all its citizens in Fiji to refrain from taking part in public marches around the country tomorrow.

Commodore Bainimarama says following the warning by the US embassy, a precautionary measure has been taken to cancel all public marches.

There have been calls for a march from Sukuna Park to the president's residence to deliver a petition expressing a range of concerns about the state of the nation.
