Political rally in Tonga postponed

9:39 am on 3 December 2010

Plans for a rally today (Friday) in Tonga to involve the general public more in the formation of a new government have been put on hold.

The idea of the rally came from the Friendly Islands Democratic Party which is trying to weld together a majority coalition following last week's election in which it took the bulk of the people's representatives seats.

The nine nobles MPs have also been manoeuvring to win the support of the five independent people's representatives which would give it a majority in the 26 seat assembly.

The Democrats leader Akilisi Pohiva has called off the rally and instead asked the nobles to meet with the party at the weekend.
