Fiji Sevens looking to put bad year behind them

Fiji are looking to put a forgettable season behind them in the opening round of the new IRB World Sevens Series in Dubai this weekend.

Head coach Iliesa Tanivula's squad has a new look to it with eight new caps and just four players returning from last season's disappointing fourth place finish.

They've been drawn alongside Portugal, France and England in pool play and team manager Sale Sorovaki says after the disappointment of not being able to play at the Commonwealth Games this year they want to reassert themselves among the top sevens nations.

"Missing out on the Commonwealth Games was a bit disappointing but, you know, it's something that's out of our control and we just have to make do with the best situation we're faced with. From last season it finished up on probably our worst finish at fourth. The other thing that's we're working on this year is just improving on our ranking - we don't want to put too much pressure on ourselves but we'll just try to improve on our ranks and see how we go from there."

Defending world series champions Samoa have been drawn alongside Wales, Kenya and the Arabian Gulf in their pool.
