Solomons government confident of retaining majority despite Dettke's sacking

A spokesperson for the Solomon Islands government says the ruling coalition's confident of retaining a majority, despite the sacking of the forestry minister, Bobo Dettke.

The decision to relieve the minister, who's also in the logging business, of his ministerial duties is reportedly in connection with his seizure of a ship carrying logs.

It follows yesterday's sentencing of the former fisheries minister, Jimmy Lusibaea, to almost three years in prison for assault and the earlier deaths of the MPs Toswell Kaua and Steve Laore.

The prime minister's press secretary, Alfred Sasako, says all political decisions carry risks.

"But I'm sure that those who have come to make that conclusion have decided so based on their own homework, on what the numbers game is like, so I think that decision is something that they have extensively discussed."
