NZ Barbarians confident of Oceania hockey three-peat

The New Zealand Barbarians team are backing themselves to win a third straight Oceania Pacific Cup hockey tournament.

The Samoa and Australian teams arrive in Suva on Wednesday ahead of the tournament's opening matches on Saturday.

The competition also features teams from Papua New Guinea while the New Zealand Barbarians side are the defending mens champions.

Jeremy Child has played in both of the previous title-winning sides for the Barbarians team and says, while the tournament's getting tougher, the New Zealand team will be going in full of confidence.

"We've had to make sure that we take a really strong squad every year. The Fijian side in particular have developed an awful lot over the past two tournaments so they'll be stepping it up again and we've picked a squad accordingly. We should be going into the tournament again as favourites again which is a nice place to be."

Six teams are competing in both the mens and womens sections with the Papua New Guinea and New Zealand Maori women opening the tournament.
